Dr. Laura Nichols

Ph.D., C. Psych
CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST AND CLINICAL DIRECTOR/OWNER

I founded the Centre for Change in 2017 with a clear vision: to create a private and serene sanctuary for adults seeking meaningful change, a space grounded in warmth, hope, and exceptional psychological care. Located in Ottawa’s west end, the Centre provides services to adults in Ottawa and across Ontario.

My style, both personally and professionally, is warm, relaxed, and down-to-earth, qualities I attribute in part to my East Coast roots. Growing up in Nova Scotia taught me the importance of genuine connection, humility, compassion, and meeting people where they are. These values remain central to who I am, both as a person and as a psychologist.

I believe deeply in people’s capacity for change. My approach is collaborative: I work in partnership with each client to understand the difficulties they are experiencing and develop a treatment plan that reflects their individual needs, circumstances, and goals. Clients often ask me whether people can truly change. My answer is yes, change is possible, and I am proof.

I practise Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and draw on evidence-based approaches tailored to each client’s needs and goals. I work with adults experiencing a wide range of concerns, including anxiety, depression, stress, grief, trauma, and significant life transitions. I have expertise in supporting first responders and their families, including RCMP members, police officers, firefighters, paramedics, veterans, and injured workers. When appropriate, I also provide specialized treatments for PTSD, including Prolonged Exposure (PE) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT).

Training and supervision are important and rewarding parts of my professional work. I supervise doctoral psychology students, psychologists and psychological associates completing supervised practice, and provide consultation to early-career clinicians. This work reflects my broader commitment to maintaining high standards of education, training, and practice within the profession of psychology.

I also have the privilege of serving as President of the Ontario Psychological Association. In this role, I advocate for access to high-quality psychological care, the protection of the public, and the advancement of the profession across Ontario. A central focus of my advocacy is protecting rigorous, evidence-informed standards of education, training, and professional competence so that Ontarians can continue to have confidence in the quality and safety of psychological services.

Across all aspects of my work—as a clinician, supervisor, practice founder, and professional leader—I am guided by the same conviction: people deserve psychological care that is both deeply human and grounded in the highest standards of the profession. It is a privilege to help people find hope, build confidence, and create meaningful, lasting change in their lives.
